Community

Although some Wisconsinites contemplate a move in the near future, their reasons do not include dissatisfaction with their neighborhoods or their communities. Nine out of ten respondents are satisfied with the appearance of homes and other buildings in their neighborhood and in their community as a whole. Ninety-five percent are satisfied with their community as whole, including 58% who are very satisfied. And, 87% are satisfied with their neighbors.

While September 2001 shattered the nation’s sense of security, Wisconsin residents still feel safe in their own cities, towns, and villages. Ninety-one percent are satisfied with their sense of personal safety and security in their neighborhood and 94% are satisfied with the safety and security afforded in their community. Homeowners have a greater sense of security than renters. While 93% of homeowners feel safe in their own neighborhoods, 84% of renters feel secure. Similarly, 84% of people earning less than $20,000 feel safe in their neighborhoods, compared to 95% of those earning $75,000 or more.

Local services and amenities earn high satisfaction ratings. Nine out of ten residents say they are satisfied with police and fire protection and access to libraries, parks, and green spaces in their area. Eight in ten are satisfied with their access to recreational activities. Three fourths are satisfied with the location of their schools.
